Time Thief!

Bobblehead of Dwight, my favorite character. Thanks Ry!
Scene from: The Office
Season 5 Episode 2
"Business Ethics"

Dwight: Time thief. Time thief! Fire him!

Jim: Dwight. You've really never stolen any company time?

Dwight: Never!

Michael: You are a thief of joy.

time thief
nounA stealer of time, especially in a work environment.

Do you know a time thief? I do! Don't get me wrong, I'm not perfect. A second here, a sip of coffee there, but when it comes down to it, I can honestly say that I give my all at work.

If you've never seen an episode of the office, start watching now! I don't watch a lot of TV, but every Thursday I make time for The Office. The episode I'm referring to is one of my favorites AND it's available on Netflix ;) Hint. Hint. (It's episode 3 on Netflix for whatever reason)

Jim and Dwight take it to the extreme in this episode, but in all seriousness, what do you do with a repeat time thief offender? Isn't it just as unethical to not turn them in? Thoughts?

  1. hmmm.. interesting post.. It's hard because sometimes I feel it's not my place, other times I feel bad for the person and what will happen to them if I turn them in. But by the same token I believe that one should talk to the person first and if they are unresponsive then we should talk to management. There are dozens of different scenarios that may call for different types of protocol.

    p.s. I LOVE THAT EPISODE.

  2. The person in question has already been addressed (by management) about their personal life getting in the way of work. :/ After two days of improvement, they settled back into their old ways... and it's been about two weeks since then. Guess it's time for another chat. I do worry about being the one "responsible" for them being let go, but on the other hand, it's really unfair to everyone else because our job is so team-oriented, ya know?

  3. yeah you're right Sarah... eeks that's hard! It sucks when you have to carry the work of others, it's even harder for you since only like 2 or 3 of you guys work at one time. Maybe the person just doesn't even care about their job.. ? Oh man, definitely tough.

  4. I agree with you. Sometimes you just have to resort to tough love. If their actions never have consequences they'll just continue to take advantage of you and they'll never learn. It's annoying and tough thing to deal with but it's better if you handle the situation head on. A few warnings is fine but eventually it has to cost them something.
